Announcements

tuning in to our live session this Thursday: discussion/debate on Frost, 11:45 eastern time

This Thursday, October 11, starting at 11:45 AM eastern time, I will be hosting a discussion/debate on the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost. To connect to the webcast, visit our live webcast page (link to your left) or our YouTube page (LINK). Writers House community members, Penn students (including those in my poetry class this current semester), and others will join us at KWH. And we hope you will all join us! This will not be an interactive webcast for those watching - no phoning in. But some of our TAs will be monitoring the discussion forum and twitter feed.

KWH announcement: Robert Frost’s MENDING WALL – great poem worthy of the canon? or just boring old tennis with a net? Join us next Thursday, October 11, at 11:45 AM, as four poets—BOB PERELMAN, Rachel Blau DuPlessis, TAIJE SILVERMAN, and JOHN TIMPANE—debate the merits and shortcomings of one of the blank verse bard’s most famous poems. Do good fences really make good neighbors? Find out in this discussion, moderated by Al Filreis.

we've moved the forums a little bit

You will notice that there is a new "writing assignments" forum. If you click on that you will see subforums that contain copies of the essays and our comments on them. To find #2 essays, click on "writing assignments" and then click on "writing assignment 2."

We have also now moved all our discussions from weeks 1, 2 and 3 so that they are subforums under "discussion of previous chapters."

shorter & simpler version of the essay #2 rubric

Here is a short summary of the five points made in the rubric intended to guide you as you write responses to the second essays.

1) The first point is whether version 2 follows imagist condensation.

2) The second point is whether the poem's grammar (the way it uses syntax) is more imagist in the 2nd version than the first. Version 1 uses a logical hinge: while...then (if/then). The second poem doesn't and is more direct. Any good essay on the two versions will mention this in some way.

3) The third point asks if the essay notices the striking and amazing use of prepositions (in, on, with, etc.). The second version does this and positions the mother and child clearly, as imagism would call for.

4) The fourth point asks whether the essay took into account why the mother and child are crying - and whether there's a figure missing. This is a bonus. Any essay that mentions our point of view (looking in) and ponders the missing father of the child....gets a bonus. But to me, it's a key to the poem.

5) The fifth point asks if the poem might imply a comment on a major pictorial tradition: madonna and child. Most close readings of this poem over the years have mentioned this. The rubric says mildly that "some interpreters might want...." - making it clear, I hope, that this is a bonus. A close reading that mentions it is saying something interesting.

The criteria here are elaborations on the imagist manifesto - as appropriate to a close reading of this poem.

our live session during week 5: discussion/debate on Frost, Oct 11 at 11:45 eastern time

Next week (week 5 of ModPo) we will NOT be doing a live webcast session. Instead, on Thursday, October 11 starting at 11:45 AM eastern time, I will be hosting a discussion/debate on the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost. Details about connecting to the webcast will be sent out in a few days. Meantime, see the announcement below. Writers House community members, Penn students (including those in my poetry class this current semester), and others will join us at KWH. And we hope you will all join us! This will not be an interactive webcast for those watching - no phoning in. But some of our TAs will be monitoring the discussion forum and twitter feed.

ModPo KWH mugs now available!

As promised, we are making the Kelly Writers House mugs featured in our video discussions available for purchase on CafePress. Click here (LINK) to order your mug! The $13.99 price tag includes a $3 donation to the Kelly Writers House. This charitable donation will allow us to keep up with our ambitious programming schedule (LINK) and will provide us with funds for furnishing the house with the things that make it so welcoming--tea, coffee, cookies and among them! While most charitable donations in the United States are tax-deductible, this one will not be because we are going through a third-party organization (CafePress) to make the ordering process easier for all involved! You can pay for your mug using PayPal, Amazon, or a Visa, Discover, American Express, or MasterCard credit card. We thank you all for your interest in the Writers House and in our mugs!
