Bioelectricity: A Quantitative Approach

Nerves, the heart, and the brain are electrical. How do these things work? This course presents fundamental principles, described quantitatively.

Welcome to Bioelectricity Week 4, a week about the Hodgkin-Huxley model of action potentials. This "model" is an integrated set of ideas, computational procedures and experimental data (for squid nerve) that shows how the ionic currents, each one in its own time and sequence, make use of stored energy and membrane capacitance to create action potentials. One could say that everything done in the course so far has been to get ready for Hodgkin-Huxley.

How can a membrane generate these action potentials, a kind of biological voltage pulse? It is not at all obvious A membrane sits at rest. How does the voltage suddenly rise? and then what makes it come down again? All is explained, and precisely so, by the Hodgkin-Huxley model of the sequence of ionic currents and other electrical events within and across the membrane. The train is a good analogy, in the sense that the engine and all the cars have to be lined up and hooked together in just the right way. You will enjoy seeing how it is done.

The importance of the HH model is not because of giant squids, fascinating ugly creatures though they may be. Rather, the importance of HH comes from its use as a powerful core set of ideas, and then as a starting point for model adjustments, extensions and modifications. That power allows descendent models to portray what happens in other kinds of tissues in many other species, including ourselves.

When you have finished this week's work, you will benefit from a mystique about bioelectricity that confers special standing on those who know the Hodgkin-Huxley model. You will know that it's not that hard --- essentially four levels crossed in a certain order, each transit requiring some arithmetic but nothing notably difficulty. However, the mystique is that HH is so deep and so complicated that it can be understood by only a chosen few. Welcome to that inner circle. :)

This Thursday, October 11, starting at 11:45 AM eastern time, I will be hosting a discussion/debate on the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost. Writers House community members, Penn students (including those in my poetry class this current semester), and others will join us at KWH. And we hope you will all join us! You will notice that there is a new "writing assignments" forum. If you click on that you will see subforums that contain copies of the essays and our comments on them. To find #2 essays, click on "writing assignments" and then click on "writing assignment 2."

We have also now moved all our discussions from weeks 1, 2 and 3 so that they are subforums under "discussion of previous chapters."

shorter & simpler version of the essay #2 rubric

Here is a short summary of the five points made in the rubric intended to guide you as you write responses to the second essays.

1) The first point is whether version 2 follows imagist condensation.

2) The second point is whether the poem's grammar (the way it uses syntax) is more imagist in the 2nd version than the first. Version 1 uses a logical hinge: while...then (if/then). The second poem doesn't and is more direct. Any good essay on the two versions will mention this in some way.

3) The third point asks if the essay notices the striking and amazing use of prepositions (in, on, with, etc.). The second version does this and positions the mother and child clearly, as imagism would call for.

4) The fourth point asks whether the essay took into account why the mother and child are crying - and whether there's a figure missing. This is a bonus. Any essay that mentions our point of view (looking in) and ponders the missing father of the child....gets a bonus. But to me, it's a key to the poem.

5) The fifth point asks if the poem might imply a comment on a major pictorial tradition: madonna and child. Most close readings of this poem over the years have mentioned this. The rubric says mildly that "some interpreters might want...." - making it clear, I hope, that this is a bonus. A close reading that mentions it is saying something interesting.

The criteria here are elaborations on the imagist manifesto - as appropriate to a close reading of this poem.
