ThA 100: Solo Performance
An exploration of the history and practice of solo performance with special emphasis on critical analysis of literature for performance and basic performance techniques.
Prerequisite: Com 101.
ThA 101: Stagecraft
An introduction to the various crafts of dramatic production: Scenery, props, lighting and makeup. Special emphasis is placed upon tools and techniques of stagecraft.
ThA 105: Theatre History & Literature I
A history of theatre from Antiquity through the 18th century with a special emphasis on the relationship between text and performance.
ThA 205: Theatre History & Literature II
A history of theatre of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with a special emphasis on the relationship between text and performance.
ThA 225: Appreciation of Theatre & Film
A general survey of the theatre and film with an emphasis on giving the student a biblical perspective of the history, literature and practices of drama and film in our culture. Not applicable toward a major or minor.
ThA 300: Stage Directing
The theory and principles of directing for the stage, including practical application in directing scenes from various plays.
Prerequisites: ThA 105 or ThA 100 Prerequisite.
ThA 301: Scene Design
An introduction to the principles and elements of design and their relationship to scene design for the stage. Students study basic theory of scene design, complete exercises in conceiving and rendering designs, and present designs in a production meeting setting.
Prerequisites: ThA 105 or ThA 225 Prerequisite.
ThA 302: Lighting Design
An introduction to the principles and elements of design and their relationship to stage lighting. Students study basic theory of stage lighting, complete exercises in conceiving and executing light plots, and present designs in a lighting lab.
Prerequisites: ThA 105 or ThA 225 Prerequisite.
ThA 303: Voice & Articulation
An integrated workshop approach to the study and development of the speaking voice in the contexts of performance and oral communication. Special emphasis on relaxation, breathing, resonance, vocal quality, articulation and projection.
Prerequisite: Com 101.
ThA 304: Costume Design
An introduction to the principles and elements of design and their relationship to stage costumes. Students study basic theory of costume; complete exercises in conceiving and rendering designs; present designs in a production meeting setting; and learn about equipment, techniques and materials.
Prerequisites: ThA 105 or ThA 225 Prerequisite.
ThA 305: Design Collaboration Practicum
Students will execute designs for a production as part of a design team. Emphasis on developing collaboration skills.
ThA 306: Acting
Internal and external techniques of acting as well as theory and practice in the art of creating a character for the stage.
Prerequisite: Com 101.
ThA 307: Theatre Practicum I
Practical experience either in a role on stage or in a behind-the-scenes stagecraft assignment in a campus production.
Prerequisites: ThA 101, ThA 300, or ThA 306 Prereq.
ThA 308: Theatre Practicum II
Practical experience either in a role on stage or in a behind-the-scenes stagecraft assignment in a campus production.
Prerequisite: ThA 307.
ThA 310: Stage Movement
Beginning stage movement for the performer. Emphasis on period movements, alignment, flexibility, gesture and body composition, and physical characterization.
Prerequisites: ThA 100 or ThA 306 Prerequisite.
ThA 317: Playwriting
Foundations of playwriting with lab work in monologue, scenes and one-act plays.
Prerequisites: CW 212 or ThA 100 or ThA 105.
ThA 401: Portfolio Preparation
Guided preparation for the Theatre Arts' major as he/she prepares a culminating project and presentation of an academic portfolio.
ThA 402: Senior Portfolio
Guided preparation for the Theatre Arts' major as he/she presents a culminating project and portfolio.
Prerequisite: ThA 401.
ThA 407: Theatre Internship
Practical application of stagecraft, design or directing in a structured internship environment.
ThA 410: Staging Literature
Adaptation, direction and group performance of poetry, narrative fiction and compiled scripts.
Prerequisites: ThA 105 or ThA 100 Prerequisite.
ThA 413: Drama in Ministry
An introduction to the use of theatre as mission, service or ministry, emphasizing the development of a personal philosophy of ministry in theatre arts and the practical considerations of the business of creating theatre.
ThA 415: Incarnation & the Humanities
A study of the incarnational narrative at the center of historic Christian orthodoxy together with an analysis of how the incarnation shapes a Christian philosophy of aesthetics and the humanities. Special attention is given to the art narratives of theatre, photography and film.
ThA 600: Theories of Theatre & Performance
A survey of seminal theatre theories and performance techniques, with an emphasis on the writings of Aristotle, Konstantin Stanislavski, Bertolt Brecht, Artaud, Grotowski and Peter Brook. Application will be made to current trends in theatrical and performance theory with a special emphasis on the nature and application of a Christian missional event.
ThA 601: Theatre History Survey
A historical, political and theoretical survey of touchstone theatrical events. Special emphasis will be given to the nature of dramatic action and the relationship between live events and audiences in a given cultural and historical context.
ThA 602: Playwriting
An examination of narrative theory and historical and contemporary trends in dramatic structures coupled with the creation of original full-length plays written in various styles, all culminating in workshopped, laboratory productions.
ThA 603: Stage Directing
An exploration and application of core tenants of directing for the stage, with an emphasis given to collaboration, working with new texts, handling style, and visionary, entrepreneurial leadership.
ThA 604: Acting
Advanced analysis and creation of performance analogues within a Stanislavski framework; a special emphasis on plays with poetic languages. Students will explore a variety of styles and their relationship to core acting principles.
Prerequisite: ThA 306.
ThA 605: Theatre Arts Practicum
A practical examination of theatrical collaborative skills. Class discussions and projects culminate in a public performance event or theatrical artifact. Special attention will be given to theatrical events in a specific cultural context.
ThA 606: Theatre Arts Practicum
A practical examination of theatrical collaborative skills. Class discussions and projects culminate in a public performance event or theatrical artifact. Special attention will be given to theatrical events in a specific cultural context.
ThA 607: Principles of Collaborative Design
A critical exploration and examination of fundamental principles for theatrical design in a collaborative ensemble setting with practical application made to a "poor theatre" context culminating in organic theatre designs for a variety of spaces and texts.
ThA 608: Contemporary Narrative Performance
An examination of a variety of performance techniques, approaches and conventions of narrative that have contributed to the formation of contemporary performance theory and practice. Performance approaches from the one-person show to performance art will be studied. The course will provide the student with the opportunity to critically engage performance traditions through workshop and polished performance, discussion and analysis, and extend discoveries to a variety of theatre applications.
ThA 609: Experimental Adaptation
Examination of and practice in adapting a variety of sources for live, dramatic performance.
ThA 610: Theories of Directing
An examination of major theatre theory with application made to a variety of directing styles and contexts and actor training. Practical application made with actors in workshopped scenes.
ThA 611: Theatre Arts Thesis Project
Within the context of an ensemble, individual and collaborative coaching is given in support of thesis projects in performance, directing or writing for the stage. Students will examine a survey of relevant historical and theoretical work as well as make application of ideas to a live event.
ThA 612: Theatre Arts Thesis Project
